Raise your hand if you think eye shadow application is the trickiest part of the makeup process. (Us, too!) The blending, the layering, the selection of colors to use together—there are just so many things to consider! Plus, if you make the tiniest mistake, you usually have to erase everything and start all over again. Eep.
But guess what: You don’t necessarily have to be a pro to nail the eye shadow game. The secret is taking baby steps… paired with a whole lot of patience! Instead of immediately going for that elaborate, multiple-color look you saw on Pinterest, start with using just one to two colors, preferably going for light, easy-to-blend shades.
Motivated yet? We’ve come up with four ultra flattering color combinations for you to cop, complete with visual guides and step-by-step instructions. Eye shadow brushes ready? Let’s begin!
Combo #1: Rose & Champagne
Flaunt a romantic stare with this gorgeously feminine combo.
Step 1. After applying your lid primer, sweep a rosy pink hue all over the lids, going deeper over the crease.
Step 2. Layer with you shimmery champagne eye shadow on the lower part of the lid. This gives off a rose gold effect.
Step 3. Use a round eye shadow blending brush to buff out visible edges.
Step 4. You can also add a touch of champagne on the inner corners of the eyes, and under the lower lash line.
Step 5. Finish off with black eyeliner and a few swipes of mascara.

Combo #2: Burnt Orange & Gold
Ride the Living Coral trend with this look that’s guaranteed to make your eyes pop!
Step 1. After prepping with lid primer, apply your burnt orange or coral eye shadow all over the lids, going as deep or as light as you prefer.
Step 2. Using an angled eyeliner brush, apply gold eye shadow close to your upper line. Tip: For a more striking color, apply with a damp brush.
Step 3. Continue applying the gold eye shadow on the lower lash line, connecting the two lines at the outer corner of the eyes.
Step 4. You can skip the eyeliner for this look! Just curl your lashes and swipe on a couple of coats of mascara.

Combo #3: Light Green & Pale Blue
Go for a cool tropical look with nature’s main hues on your lids.
Step 1. On prepped lids, apply a wash of your light green eye shadow, focusing primarily on the inner corners. Don’t forget to add a little bit under the lower lashline.
Step 2. Apply your pale blue eye shadow starting from the middle of the lids and going to the outer corners. You can extend and deepen over the crease, as well as under the lower lash line.
Step 3. Use a round eye shadow blending brush to buff out the areas where the two colors meet.
Step 4. Complete your look with black (or brown) eyeliner and a few coats of mascara.

Step 2. Apply your brown eye shadow starting from the middle of the lids, going outwards.
Step 3. Go deeper with your brown hue on the crease, as well as on the outer corners for a dramatic effect. You can also apply a little brown eye shadow on the lower lash line.
Step 4. Use a rounded eye shadow blending brush to buff out the areas where the colors meet, as well as the edges.
Step 5. Level up the drama even further with a stark black eyeliner and generous coats of mascara.
Bonus tip: For a daytime version, choose a lighter brown as your secondary shade—like a tan or taupe eye shadow.
