21-Day Skin Care Challenge

Ever looked in the mirror and thought your skin badly needs a refresh? No shame. We all have our bad skin days, and these are bound to creep up on you more often as you get older.

But it’s not enough that we rely on quick, glow-getting fixes. After all, you can’t expect to score naturally glowing skin—one that lasts—overnight. It takes discipline and a regular routine, ideally bolstered by daily habits that all contribute to your skin’s overall health. Because really, skin care isn’t simply just about what you put on the surface; your lifestyle greatly affects your complexion, too.

All these considered, we’ve prepared a 21-day challenge of sorts—a three-week beauty to-do list that you can download and save on your phone for easy reference—to get you on the road to your #bestskinever.

Here, you’re given a task for each day, some of which you’re probably already doing, while others can be a new habit or a reminder of an old and forgotten one. Designed to enhance your current regimen (especially if it’s just the basic cleanse, tone, and moisturize), this aims to help you rediscover a fresh, more holistic approach to skin care while keeping you motivated, too.

WEEK 1

Day 1: Give double cleansing a shot.
Level up your cleansing strategy with this two-step method: Start with an oil cleanser to remove oil-based products, then do a second cleanse with your usual water-based or foaming facial wash. 

Day 2: Load up on H20.
Hydrate from within by chugging down at least two liters of water or eight 8-ounce glasses. 

Day 3: Exfoliate.
Slough off dead skin cells with a once-a-week facial scrub. Don’t rush it, too. Take time to really massage your whole face with gentle strokes, then rinse well. 

Day 4: Sweat it out.
Flush out toxins by indulging in a quick workout—whether it’s running, spinning, or hot yoga.

Day 5: Stash sunscreen into your purse.
Out of sight, out of mind! Keep a small tube of sunscreen in your purse so you don’t forget to slather it on, even if it’s already mid-day.

Day 6: Use a sheet mask.
Wind down with a relaxing sheet mask right before bedtime. Leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes, then pat the leftover serum all over face and neck. 

Day 7: Load up on greens.
Add a salad or veggie dish to your menu today. Broccoli, bell peppers, tomatoes, and leafy greens are rich in vitamin C, which help battle dullness and pigmentation.


WEEK 2

Day 8: Add a treatment serum to your routine.
Determine your skin’s primary need: Is it brightening? Anti-aging? Moisturizing? Upgrade by adding a serum (a.k.a. a concentrated product with active ingredients) to your routine.

Day 9: Pamper your eye area.
Zap puffiness by cooling your eye area with a chilled eye patch or cucumber slices. Even better: Chill your eye cream before application for an extra soothing effect.

Day 10: Brighten up.
Add a drop of highlighter or illuminator to your face moisturizer or foundation for an instant glow.

Day 11: Have a no makeup day.
Give your face a rest day! Skip the makeup and let your skin breathe for a change. (Just don’t forget the sunscreen if you’re heading out.)

Day 12: Hit the sauna.
Did you know that using a sauna is a good way to detoxify skin? The steam helps open up pores and loosen impurities, including blackheads. Limit your sesh to just 10 minutes, though; too much heat and sweating can cause dehydration and lead to dryness.

Day 13: Trade your coffee for herbal tea.
While coffee is rich in antioxidants, it’s also a diuretic, which can cause you to pee more and lose water. Tea’s lower caffeine content makes it better for hydration, while also offering a bevy of antioxidant powers.

Day 14: Try an at-home peel.
Scared to try a chemical peel? Start slow with a gentler, natural peel made from plant extracts. Or, you can make your own! Here’s a simple recipe for a DIY brightening peel: In a bowl, combine one egg white and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Mix until thick. Using a brush, apply the mixture all over your face, then layer with tissue paper. Leave it to dry for around 10 minutes, then gently peel off. Rinse your face thoroughly with water.

On a budget? Try a DIY mask or peel using ingredients you already have at home.

 
WEEK 3

Day 15: Clean your makeup brushes. 
No skin care regimen will work if your tools are all bacteria-ridden! Take time to give your makeup brushes a good wash at least once every two weeks (just shampoo and warm water will do) and keep them stored properly.

Day 16: Make your own lip scrub.
Mix a tablespoon of sugar with a teaspoon of honey. You can also add a few drops of your fave essential oil, like mint or lavender! Rub all over bare lips for two to three minutes, then wash with lukewarm water.

Day 17: Skip the sugar.
Aside from triggering breakouts, a high-sugar diet stimulates a process called “glycation,” which damages skin’s collagen and elastin, a.k.a. crucial proteins that keep skin young-looking.

Day 18: Dry-brush from head to toe. 
An age-old process, dry-brushing not only exfoliates skin, it also improves circulation and stimulates the lymphatic system. Before turning on the shower, take a dry brush or loofah and scrub skin—brushing towards the center of the body—for three to five minutes.

Day 19: Hydrate with oil. 
Is skin feeling extra parched? Swap your lotion for oil, as the latter is a more intense moisturizer. After toweling off post-shower, apply a drop of oil and blend all over the face (and body!) while still damp.

Day 20: Give yourself a relaxing facial.
A skin care exercise that you can incorporate weekly, a DIY face massage helps improve blood flow for a fresher, more radiant complexion. Plus, it feels good! Try this: Use three fingers of each hand to gently massage the face in circular motions, starting from the forehead, going down to under the eyes, cheeks, jawline, neck. Do these for a couple of minutes before bedtime.

Day 21: Sleep in!
They don’t call it “beauty sleep” for nothing: Getting enough Zzzz’s each night is crucial for having good skin, as skin’s major repair processes happen while we sleep. So make sure to log in seven to nine hours of shuteye every night so you wake up looking extra fresh every morning.
